Questions, answered
What counts as a message?
Every message stored in one of your inboxes: mail your apps send over SMTP, mail to an inbox's inbound address, and the sample messages you send from the app. A message that lands in two inboxes counts twice. The counter resets at the start of each calendar month (UTC).
What happens when we reach a limit?
Reaching a quota does not delete anything already captured. Once the monthly message quota is used up, the SMTP server rejects new mail with a clear error (550) until the next month or an upgrade, and the API answers 402 with an upgrade hint. Creating more inboxes, keys or IdPs than the plan allows is refused the same way.
How do SMS, WhatsApp, push and calls count?
Texts sent through the Twilio API or SMPP, texts you simulate arriving at your app, and WhatsApp messages share the plan's monthly text allowance (100 on Free). Calls placed through the Voice API and push notifications each have their own monthly allowance of the same size. SMS inboxes and WhatsApp sandboxes share the plan's sandbox limit; push inboxes have their own limit of the same size.
How do API mocks count?
Every API mock (payment gateway, banking, identity verification, e-signature, ERP, CRM, no-code, analytics or messaging API) draws on one shared pool: 1 on Free, 10 on Team, 50 on Business. Calls answered by your mocks share a separate monthly allowance (1,000 on Free).
Is any mail delivered to real people?
No. Testlie captures mail; it never relays it. The only way a message leaves is when you forward it, and forwarding (on paid plans) only goes to addresses that have confirmed they want it.
Do the API mocks talk to Stripe, Onfido or the other real services?
No. Each payment gateway and API mock is a Testlie simulation that answers in the provider's format. It never contacts the provider: no real money moves, no identity is verified and nothing is signed. Use test data only: the Stripe- and Adyen-compatible gateways refuse real card numbers, and the mocks are not meant for real identity documents or bank details. Testlie is not affiliated with the providers whose APIs it emulates.
How long are messages kept?
Messages older than the plan's retention period are deleted automatically (3 days on Free). Each inbox also keeps only its newest messages, up to the plan's per-inbox limit, so a chatty test suite cannot fill your account. When a team moves to a plan with shorter retention (after cancelling, a failed payment or the end of a trial), messages older than the new period are deleted shortly afterwards.
Can we try the paid features first?
Start on Free with no card: you get an inbox, the full message viewer with SpamAssassin and HTML checks, an SMS or WhatsApp sandbox and a push inbox, a request bin, an API mock, the API, failure scenarios and a mock identity provider, including the Google, GitHub, Apple and Microsoft presets. A team's first paid plan starts with a 14-day free trial; a card is required, and you are not charged if you cancel before the trial ends. Upgrade when you need more inboxes, webhooks, forwarding or team SSO.
Can we run it on our own servers?
